Royal Wedding Public Holiday
29 April 2011 will be a Public holiday so employers should look ahead now. The contract of employment will govern whether or not an employee must be allowed the holiday at all and whether or not it should be paid, so review of the contract is your starting point. After that, those employers who do not feel able to allow an extra day’s paid leave, but who also do not want to be perceived as mean spirited, will be well advised to talk directly to the workforce and reach a concensus as to how the holiday will be accommodated. Do remember also that part-time employees should of course not be discriminated against and any benefit offered to full time employees should be offered on a pro rata basis to part-timers. (Of course, if we’ve drafted your contracts for you, these issues will have been covered off very neatly already!)
